Identity Development Counseling

Explore who you are—and who you’re becoming.

Understanding Identity Development

At different points in life, you may find yourself asking, Who am I? or Who do I want to become? These questions often surface during times of change—graduating, coming out, shifting careers, becoming a parent, or rethinking long-held beliefs. Identity work isn’t only for moments of crisis; it’s a natural part of growth and transformation.

For some, identity questions feel energizing and full of possibility. For others, they bring confusion, conflict, or grief—especially when family, culture, or past experiences seem to pull you in different directions. Exploring identity can involve navigating gender, sexuality, race, culture, faith, or personal values—and learning to integrate these pieces into a whole and authentic self.

How Therapy Can Help With Identity Development

Therapy offers a safe and supportive space to clarify who you are and what you stand for. Through conversation, reflection, and guided exploration, we can untangle the internal and external forces that have shaped your sense of self.

You’ll have room to explore questions about belonging, boundaries, and meaning. We might look at how early experiences or relationships influenced the way you see yourself—and how those narratives can evolve. This process helps you connect to your core values, strengthen your self-trust, and live more authentically in relationships and daily life.

The goal isn’t to force an answer, but to create space for your truest self to emerge with confidence and integrity.

Why Work With Me

For over 20 years, I’ve worked with individuals navigating major transitions, questions of purpose, and shifts in identity. My integrative approach combines psychodynamic and existential therapy with evidence-based methods to help you make sense of both the inner world and the outer context you move through.

Clients often describe our sessions as a balance of curiosity and clarity—where you can explore deeper layers of meaning while staying grounded in the realities of daily life. My background in depth psychology and long experience in residential and outpatient mental-health settings have shown me how powerful it can be when someone begins to live in alignment with who they really are.

Whether you’re exploring your gender or sexual identity, redefining your values, or simply seeking a greater sense of direction, I’ll meet you with openness, respect, and insight.
