Substance Use Counseling

Understand your patterns and find a healthier way forward.

Understanding Substance Use

Sometimes our relationship with substances becomes complicated. You may have started using alcohol, cannabis, or other substances to cope with stress, pain, or difficult emotions—but over time, what once felt like relief may now feel like a trap. Substance use can impact relationships, motivation, health, and mood, often leading to feelings of guilt or shame that make it even harder to change.

It’s common to feel conflicted about your goals—you might not be sure whether you want to stop entirely or simply gain more control. Therapy offers a supportive space to explore that ambivalence without judgment and to better understand how substances fit into the broader story of your life.

How Therapy Can Help With Substance Use

My work with substance use is grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Substance Use, an evidence-based approach that helps you understand the connections between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Together, we’ll identify triggers, challenge self-defeating beliefs, and build healthier coping strategies that reduce the urge to rely on substances.

We’ll also explore the role of community and connection in recovery. I encourage clients to engage with supportive networks—such as recovery groups, community organizations, or peer-based programs—where they can build relationships grounded in accountability, encouragement, and hope.

This combination of individualized therapy and community support helps create sustainable change: practical tools for everyday life, and the sense of belonging that makes recovery possible.

Why Work With Me

With 23 years of clinical experience, I’ve helped many individuals navigate substance use and co-occurring mental health issues in both residential and outpatient settings. My approach is collaborative, respectful, and nonjudgmental—I understand that substance use often develops as a response to pain, not as a moral failing.

I integrate CBT-based relapse prevention, motivational enhancement, and mindfulness-based strategies to support insight and long-term growth. Whether your goal is moderation, sobriety, or simply clarity, we’ll design a plan that aligns with your values and the kind of life you want to build.
